Flag football is a sport. It’s a great sport.

According to wikipedia:

"Flag football is a version of American football that is popular worldwide. The basic rules of the game are similar to those of the mainstream game (often called "tackle football" for contrast), but instead of tackling players to the ground, the defensive team must remove a flag or flag belt from the ball carrier ("deflagging") to end a down."

I love flag football because it allows me to play my favorite sport without having to worry about becoming the free safety’s bitch when going up for a high pass over the middle, and then subsequently coughing up blood for 3 days. It allows me to drop back in the pocket without the fear of getting my back broken by an executioner-style linebacker steamrolling me on a weakside blitz. Sure, I love that stuff when it happens while watching football on TV - who doesn’t? I have tremendous respect for NCAA and NFL football players for what they do on the field. But like most other people that play flag football, I have a life. The last thing I want to be doing on a Friday night is laying in a hospital bed with the majority of my limbs in a cast, wondering if I’ll make it to the bathroom before I piss myself.



Flag Football isn’t as Competitive as Real Football, Right?

For those of us that play flag football, we know how competitive it is. Just because guys aren’t out there headhunting doesn’t mean they don’t want to win. Most of the guys that play are athletes, or called themselves athletes at some point in their sports career. The competitive drive is still very strong, which makes the game even more fun. It’s all about bragging rights. When you’re out drinking later that night, you want to be the guy that can say, “Hey Steve, remember that time you tried to pull my flag and I juked you so hard your dick fell off? ” Classic.

That’s why players give it 110% out there on the field. Sometimes though, these extraordinary efforts can backfire. It’s not uncommon to catch an eyeful of bare ass because a guy’s shorts got ripped in half when getting his flag pulled. If you're into that kind of thing, there are flag football leagues for that too.


Flag Football is a Game of Speed, Strategy, and Execution

With that being said, some teams have more speed than strategy and execution, and those teams usually win. I’m not saying you can’t win with a team of fatties, but the chances are definitely not in your favor. Let’s face facts; could Gabriel Iglesias pull LeSean McCoy’s flag?

Forget for a moment that Iglesias would probably stop by the sidelines to tell a few jokes that nobody would laugh at. For argument's sake, let's pretend he was intently focused on pulling that flag. Could he do it? If you said yes, do society a favor - go to the nearest interstate and jump in front of a moving truck. Take Gabriel with you.

Now I’m not saying having good flag football plays isn’t important, because it’s highly important (I’m just saying, get in shape if you want to win). A great strategy can win games over a team with superior athletes. I’ve seen it happen. But if your team resembles The Little Giants, and their team resembles the ’85 Bears, your strategy better involve cheating. Lots of cheating. To put it in other terms, if you start feeling like that team the Globetrotters play all the time, you should probably recruit some more talented players. The best game-winning strategies involve getting your playmakers in position to make plays, offensively and defensively.
